Hobbies/Interests: All sports, playing and watching (especially Detroit & UofM), the lake, anything outdoors

Things you like about our program: I’ve worked at and rotated at many programs. I’ve never seen a department as close as this one. That’s including techs, nurses, residents and attending’s, which makes it a very comfortable and efficient place to work. Also, you have a lot of autonomy right from the get-go. Being in one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the state, with such a diverse population, you see a ton of pathology, get to do a lot of procedures and have a very quick learning curve.

Things you like about Detroit: I love this city. It’s a great sports town and there is always a lake nearby. There isn’t a faster growing city in the country. The food and entertainment is endless.

Marc Goulet, MD

Hometown: Dearborn, MI

College: Michigan State University

Medical School: Wayne State University

Hobbies/Interests: I am a big Michigan State fan and enjoy watching and discussing Spartan sports.  My family has been going to MSU Football games for almost twenty years, so the passion is real.  I casually follow the major sports teams here in Detroit, though the passion is not as deep. I also enjoy watching too much TV, going to the movies with my wife, the occasional game of pick up hoops, cooking, drinking outside, being on the beach up north, and spending time with family.

Things you like about our program: I did a rotation as a forth year medical student here at St. John and immediately knew this was the place I wanted to be for residency.  The Emergency Department has such great camaraderie.  Residents, attending physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff work together towards a common goal, but still find time to joke and enjoy the day together.  The Emergency Department is the busiest in the city, but also one of the most efficient.  We see very sick patients from day one and have the opportunity to be hands on from the get go in an environment that will prepare you to practice efficiently in any emergency room in the country.  St. John’s sees some of the highest numbers of both blunt and penetrating trauma of any program in Detroit, and that is experience that is invaluable.  The hospital also sits on the border of a local suburb, allowing us to see a variety of patients in a hospital that is part urban and part community.  The ultrasound training, the number of procedures, the social life with fellow residents, and on and on.  St. John’s is a wonderful place to train.

Things you like about Detroit: I was born and raised in the Metro Detroit area and have continued to spend my early adult life in the area.  Despite its ups and downs, the citizens of Metro Detroit still puff up their chest and take pride in the place they call home.  Being in the area for the last twenty some years, I can honestly say that things have taken a turn for the better recently as Detroit continues to rebuild and innovate.  This is an exciting time to be in Detroit and surrounding area as things continue to move forward.  The four major sports teams, numerous concert venues, DSO, DIA, and surrounding communities provide a wealth of things to do.  There are so many bars and restaurants to check out, and things are very reasonably priced compared to the coastal cities.

Things you like about our program: The residents are faculty are awesome, they really make you feel like you are part of the group from day one. We get the opportunity to do a lot of hands-on learning, and there are tons of interesting cases.  Also, we get a great food stipend!

Things you like about Detroit: I love going to Belle Isle when its nice out and I have the day off.  They have a beach there, an aquarium, a conservatory, and a park with an awesome view of Downtown.  I feel like it is an underappreciated part of Detroit.  Also, there are a ton of great concerts at the many unique venues scattered around town.

Joseph Sheets, MD

Hometown: Midland, MI

College: Denison University

Medical School: Michigan State University CHM

Hobbies/Interests: Anything outdoors (running, biking, hiking, Ultimate Frisbee, travel, new foods, trivia, Seinfeld quotes

Things you like about our program: St. John’s location (in Detroit, and near the suburbs) gives our ED one of the most truly diverse patient populations anywhere. The hospital is the perfect size; we see an absurd volume of sick people and penetrating/blunt trauma, and we get to care for our patients in a community hospital setting, without the bureaucracy or infinite subspecialists of a large academic center. The ED community is tight-knit, including the residents, attending physicians, nursing and ancillary staff. We have residency faculty who teach well and advocate for the residents, and the ultrasound training is superb. At the end of the day, though, the clinical experience we get in the St. John ED is unbeatable.

Things you like about Detroit: Sports teams, food and drink scenes, solid recreation options in the metro area, and the unique energy and pride in Detroit.

Things you like about our program: High volume ED, loads of trauma and medical resuscitations, diverse patient population, and integrated pediatric ED.  Add to that a supportive administration, great faculty, and top notch nurses, techs and staff and you have a great environment in which to learn Emergency Medicine.

Things you like about Detroit: There is a ton going on in the D. Great restaurants, breweries, local music, sports – really something for everyone.
