Chad Bleske, MD

Hometown: Romeo, MI

College: University of Michigan

Medical School: Wayne State University School of Medicine

Hobbies/Interests: Working out/weightlifting, going to EDM/techno shows, exploring new restaurants and bars, playing with my dog, outdoorsy things like hunting, fishing, and hiking

Things you like about our program: I fell in love with St. John’s while doing my third year rotations at the hospital. I felt that I received phenomenal training as a medical student, and I always looked forward to going to the ED to admit a patient on medicine or during a trauma code on surgery. The residents and other ED staff were always super nice and helpful to me as a student even when they were busy, and I could tell there was a strong sense of teamwork and comradeship throughout the department. During my ED rotation, I was able to see how the second and third year residents would manage areas of the ED essentially by themselves efficiently and safely, and I knew that was the kind of resident I wanted to be. I also saw how the program took care of the residents during the pandemic and made sure that they always had proper PPE and support.

Things you like about Detroit: Born and raised in Southeast Michigan, I’ve always had an affinity for the city of Detroit. The city has an amazing culture, and I love that everyone from Detroit loves Detroit. I am excited to continue my training here.

John Chinchen, MD

Hometown: Ann Arbor, MI

College: The University of Michigan

Medical School: Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine

Hobbies/interests: Competition shooting, ultramarathons, cycling, bow hunting, weightlifting, backpacking/camping, tactical and military medicine

Things I like about St. John: I knew I wanted a program with high volume as well as an abundance of trauma. Possibly the biggest draw for me was the opportunity for residents to become involved in tactical medicine working with Dr. Dunne and the Sheriff’s department SRT. Another aspect of St. John that was appealing was the dichotomy of their two primary patient populations- one being the underserved of downtown Detroit, and the other the relatively well-off residing in Grosse Pointe.

Things I like about Detroit: Best training in the state for EM physicians. Plenty of food options. Great fishing on Lake St. Clair.

Daniel Cotter, MD

Hometown: Grand Haven, MI

College: Butler University

Medical School: Wayne State University School of Medicine

Hobbies/Interests: Lifting weights, playing sports, drinking beer, hanging out with dogs, good music, and exploring the beautiful state of Michigan along with the rest of the U.S.

Things you like about our program: I believe there is no better place to practice emergency medicine than Detroit, MI. What separates St. John’s is the diversity of patients from the inner-city patients of Detroit to the suburban patients of Grosse Pointe. Along with that, the Ascension health system functions at a high level and supports their residents well.

Things you like about Detroit: Lions, Pistons, Tigers, and Red Wings. It’s a childhood dream to live around these teams. We also have the Midwest grit combined with the inner-city sophistication. From fancy and upscale restaurants and venues to charismatic dive bars and hole-in-the wall food spots, Detroit has everything you could ask for.

Things you like about our program: I was drawn to SJH because of the volume and diversity of the patient presentations. As well as the fact that SJH is unopposed, giving residents more autonomy and hands-on experience.

Things you like about Detroit: I am so excited to explore a new food scene. So far, I am a big Grey Ghost fan but would love some recommendations to go check out!

Aria Ganz-Waple, MD

Hometown: Flat Rock, Michigan

College: Wayne State University

Medical School: Wayne State University School of Medicine

I like being outside in nature and love reading post-apocalyptic literature with my pets.  I like to play video games in my spare time as well as attend comic cons with my friends. I am quite active in the mental health community in Metro-Detroit.

Things you like about our program: The variety of cases that are seen, the culture of the hospital and overwhelming sense of family, and everyone’s willingness to teach. The trauma volume allows for a level of exposure that would be hard to attain in other programs. Also, the sushi is wonderful! Things you like about Detroit: The diversity of the population, the opportunities to serve the underserved, the Red Wings, the wide array of food options, and the sense of Detroit pride.

Medical School: Wayne State University

Hobbies/Interests: Cooking, fishing, camping, hiking, traveling

Things you like about our program: There are a lot of aspects of this program that stand out to me, with the biggest being the variety and volume of patients that come through the doors, the genuine comradery amongst the residents and attendings, and the supported autonomy that residents have making sure that you’re prepared for life afterwards.

Things you like about Detroit: Being from the area I’ve always loved Detroit. It was cool to see the downtown revitalized growing up, and it’s great to see different neighborhoods around the city seeing some growth now.
