Why SJH EM? SJH Emergency Department Benefits & Stipend Wellness  

Wellness is something we take seriously at Ascension St. John. We have instituted a number of tactics to make sure our residents stay physically and mentally well throughout their training (see below). We are always open to feedback on how to make your experience as a resident better!

-Reasonable monthly shift requirements (19 for PGY1, 19 for PGY2, 17 for PGY3). Shifts are 8, 9 or 10 hours with 1 hour of overlap. If we need you to work an extra shift for some reason, it will be paid back to you.

-Flexibility with scheduling. Our chief residents make the schedule and who better to make the schedule than someone who is going through it with you! Whether you want shifts stacked for a weekend off, or you would prefer them spread out because five in a row is not your thing, we can usually find a way to accommodate.

-Wellness events (Baseball game, laser tag/paintball, apple orchard, etc) that take place during protected lecture time

-Lectures off site with a beautiful view of Lake Saint Clair with food and games for the Holidays

-Journal Club at nice restaurants around town- a little wining and dining while learning!

-Mentor groups with faculty. Mentor groups consistent of a faculty member, PGY 1, PGY 2, PGY 3. You also have an individual faculty member that you select.

-PGY 1 and PGY 3 overnight retreat each July. PGY 2’s are given a weekend for a retreat at a time of their choosing as well.

-Encourage weekly get togethers with the residents after lecture

-Winter Gala – residents and faculty get dressed up and dance the night away to help with those winter blues!

-Post Inservice Exam Party put on by the residency

-Designated time off for conferences with your whole class (PGY 2 EEM or SAEM, PGY 3 ABEM)

-Book Club with the females in the residency (males welcome too they just haven’t joined!)

-Wellness budget given by hospital to contribute to gym memberships and other activities
